Gerald “Gabe” Wayne Shineman, 89, Stanberry, Missouri (formerly of Rock Port, Missouri) passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022. He was born on July 17, 1932, in Amazonia, Missouri, the son of William Leroy and Merle Marie (Snowden) Shineman.
Gabe married Juanita Curry and to this union, three children were born. She preceded him in death on August 31, 1999. He then married Alta Thomas Zirfas on April 26, 2003, in King City, Missouri. She survives of the home.
Gabe attended Tarkio College on a basketball scholarship after he was married and had three children and received his bachelor’s degree. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University where he earned his master’s degree and finally received his specialist degree in Administration at the University of Missouri. He was superintendent at Stanberry R-2 School and he also taught and coached. During his retirement, Gabe served as interim superintendent for several school districts in Northwest Missouri and he also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was a member of the Stanberry United Methodist Church, Gentry Lions Club, Missouri Association of School Administrators, and he was the Gentry County Library Board President for 30 years.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill and Donnie Shineman; sister, Shirley Morgan; infant granddaughter, Jessica Sutherland; and son-in-law, Rick Meyerkorth.
In addition to his wife, Alta, Gabe is survived by his children, Stephen (Jo Lynn) Shineman and Patricia Meyerkorth, both of Rock Port, and Julie (John) Sutherland, St. Louis, Missouri; brother, Truby (Kathy) Shineman, Seattle, Missouri; sisters, Suzanne Fitzgerald, Kansas City, Missouri, JoBeth Schaeffer, Oregon, Missouri, Kathy (David) Howell, Maryville, Missouri, and Tonya Oswald, Fairfax, Missouri; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 18, at the United Methodist Church, Stanberry, under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, Stanberry. Burial was in English Grove Cemetery, Fairfax.
