 Veteran Norman Lee Simmons, age 91, Fairfax, Missouri, died Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at his home.
Norman was born June 3, 1927, in Ava, Missouri. He was the son of the late William and Francis (Strong) Simmons.
Norm’s family made their home in Ava, where he attended school. After school Norm enlisted in the United States Army. Norm was a veteran, serving his country in the Korean War. November 9, 2010, Norm was chosen among other veterans to go to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight. While there he was able to see the memorials dedicated to and honoring those, like him, who had served their country.
On July 29, 1949, Norm married Viola “Fern” Tudor. To this union six children were born, Terry, Teddy, Sharon, Karen, Brenda, and Barry. During their married life Norm worked at various jobs. He was a farmer, school custodian, assistant funeral director (Schooler Funeral Home) and probably best remembered as not only a fixture but the “Boss” at Simmons MFA Station. Fern preceded Norm in death on July 20, 2011.
Norm was a very active part of the Fairfax community. He was involved in Optimist Club, American Legion, a member of the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department (where he also served as a dispatcher), a past city councilman for both the city of Fairfax and Big Lake, an avid Fairfax Bulldog, and he loved watching both his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and the many activities in which they participated. Norm was also a member of the Christian Church, Fairfax.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents, wife Fern, and a brother Jimmie Simmons.
His survivors include: his children, Terry (Barb) Simmons, Teddy (Vickie) Simmons, Karen (Chris) Easley, Brenda (Donnie) Brandt, and Barry (Lyn) Simmons, all of Fairfax, Sharon (Dave) Wynn, Tarkio, Missouri; two sisters, Annabelle Combs and Lorane Butcher; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of other friends and loved ones.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 26, 2019, at the Fairfax Christian Church. Burial was in the English Grove Cemetery near Fairfax.
Memorials may be given to the Fairfax Christian Church or the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax/Craig.
